1. How does looking at the first letter help you solve a tricky word?
(Your child will and should be using picture clues to help them read the words on the page. However sometimes, picture clues are not enough and your child should be attending to the first letter of the unknown word to help them solve it. For example, have your child read the sentence below. They may want to say, "I can see the bunny" first, but they should catch their mistake by noticing that the word starts with the letter "r" and not "b". Please encourage the use of this strategy when reading books at home with them.
I see the rabbit.
I see the bug.
